ODOT received 23 applications requesting a total of $8,549,692. Six alternate projects were named in case more funding becomes available. The goals and activities of the Safe Routes to School Program are (1) to increase the ability and opportunity for children to walk and bicycle to school; (2) promote walking and bicycling to school and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle at an early age; and (3) facilitate the planning, development and implementation of projects that will improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance air quality around selected schools. Specifically, the SRTS Program provides funding for both infrastructure projects and non-infrastructure activities (education, outreach, and enforcement) within 2 miles of any qualified K-8 school facility.
