Renewing a Driver License

Overview

This page provides information about renewing your driver license.

Postcard renewal reminders are mailed two months before your license expires. If you do not receive a postcard renewal reminder in the mail, you are still required to renew your license in person at a DMV office before it expires.

To Qualify/Apply

You must apply in person at a DMV office, and you must:

Be a resident of or domiciled in Oregon;
Have no suspended, canceled, revoked, or otherwise withdrawn privileges in Oregon or any other state;
Not be expired over one year (unless you qualify for a military exemption);
Submit a completed Driver License Application (Form 735-173). If you answer “yes” to any of the medical questions on the application, as outlined in OAR 735-062-0007 (2)(a)(b)(c), DMV will not renew your driving privileges until you have established that your condition does not affect your ability to drive safely. DMV may ask you to provide additional medical information and/or require that you pass additional DMV tests;
Present proof of your full legal name;
Present proof of your legal presence in the U.S., identity and date of birth;
Provide your Social Security Number on the application;
Present proof of your residence address, if your residence address has changed;
Surrender your Oregon Driver License;
Pass a vision screening if you will be 50 years of age or older on the date your license expires as defined in OAR 735-062-0060;
Pay the renewal fee; and
Have your photograph taken.

Note: Due to the added costs of merchant fees, DMV offices only accept cash or checks and do not accept credit or debit cards; however many office locations have ATMs available.

After you meet the requirements, you are issued an interim card to use until you receive your license in the mail.

If you surrender a previous driver license, instruction permit or ID card, it is hole-punched and returned to you. The hole-punched card is not valid by itself, but may be used as additional proof of identity with the interim card.

Special Circumstances

Out of State/Out of Country
If you are temporarily outside of the state and cannot come to an Oregon DMV office, you may call DMV at (503) 945-5400.

Expired Driver License
If your license is expired, but for less than one year, you may renew it. If your license is expired for more than one year, you cannot renew it. You must meet the requirements to get an original driver license.

Commercial Driver License
If you are renewing a commercial driver license you must meet additional requirements.
